ABB introduces the AC500-XC PLC for controlling equipment operating in harsh conditions and extreme climates. ABB’s “Extreme Conditions” AC500-XC PLC can withstand a variety of threats, including high and low temperatures, high humidity, low pressure, salt spray and harmful gases, as well as vibration and shock. This typically reduces system build costs by eliminating the need for complex protective housings with special seals, HVAC, shock absorbers, EMC protection, and more. Embedded protection ensures that the AC500-XC PLC-based control system remains functional and reliable even when operating in harsh environments. This can be found in many common automation applications, including mines, tunnels, ships, cranes, water and wastewater treatment plants, offshore platforms, wind turbines, solar trackers, and weather and navigation stations. The AC500-XC PLC is a rugged variant of ABB’s famous modular AC500 PLC.
Almost all modules in the extensive AC500 series are available in XC(Extreme Condition) versions, providing users with a modular control platform that offers virtually unlimited flexibility and scalability. The AC500-XC PLC also runs exactly the same program code as the AC500, allowing users to easily migrate to more powerful solutions and simplifying the development of large systems that require control systems under standard and extreme conditions. This range of compatibility also extends to ABB’s safety PLC, the AC500-S-XC. The mechanical dimensions and electrical specifications of the connections are also the same as the standard AC500, allowing the re-use of existing panel layouts and wiring harnesses or designs.
Embedded environment protection opens up a broad application prospect for ABB AC500-XC. Extended temperature operation allows the PLC to operate at temperatures from -30 to +70 degrees Celsius, and the system can start reliably at temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius. The AC500-XC is virtually unlimited and can operate at temperatures up to 70°c. The circuit board has a conformal coating that protects against high humidity. PLC is resistant to salt spray and corrosive gases such as H2S, SO2, CL2 and NO2. Can withstand high levels of vibration and shock, up to 500 Hz random vibration acceleration of up to 4 g, sine vibration acceleration of up to 2 g. PLCS are capable of operating at altitudes up to 4,000 meters. It also provides extended EMC protection against voltage surges and fast transients as well as electrostatic discharge. This protection slightly increases the cost of the PLC, but in turn, it can greatly simplify the design of the control system, often allowing ABB’s AC 500-XC PLCS to be installed directly in the operating environment without any special housing or environmental protection.
