The Buhasa NGL extraction plant, operated by ABU Dhabi Gas Industries Limited (GASCO), produces 7,200 tonnes of NGL per day, pumped to the Ruweis plant. As part of the BuHasa Upgrade Project (HUP) to increase processing capacity while maintaining a high NGL recovery rate, GASCO is upgrading the turbine and compressor controls of its existing Woodward NetCon control system on six Rolls-Royce Avon gas turbines. The upgrade will replace the outdated control systems for NGL 1 and 2 trains and improve plant operations through advanced integrated turbine and compressor control using GE’s Mark VIe platform and OptiComp Integrated Compressor Control Suite software. After a careful technical and commercial evaluation, GASCO and EPC determined that GE Energy’s control solution was the best platform to address Rolls-Royce Avon turbine control challenges. GE met GASCO’s specifications with the most cost-effective solution, primarily integrated turbocompressor control and fast application execution speed requirements.

OptiComp is GE Energy’s integrated turbine and compressor control solution that provides advanced compressor surge control, process performance control, load sharing/balancing, automatic sequencing and other auxiliary control features. It offers advanced control software running on GE’s fast and reliable Mark VI and Mark VIe control platforms. Six Mark VIe control panels are provided for Rolls-Royce turbines and process compressors, as well as redundant networking and communication interfaces with third-party equipment and plant DCS. To make up for lost time, GE was required to deliver three control panels for Train 2 within 12 weeks. Unit 2 was commissioned during an extremely intense nine-day overhaul.

During the week of November 12, 2010, the successful and smooth launch of GE’s Mark VIe control platform leverages GE’s proven application experience in Rolls-Royce plant control and advanced patented compressor surge and process control algorithms to provide tight integration of turbine and compressor control. Seamless integration of turbine and compressor control provides ease of operation, decoupling of control loops, and improved coordinated response to process disturbances. It also brings lifecycle benefits to operations and maintenance by providing a single center for support and component management. This is the latest of several GASCO control upgrade projects awarded to GE Energy’s Control Solutions business and the second upgrade order for Rolls-Royce turbine control, following the successful GASCO Luweis upgrade three years ago. The first phase of the Bu Hasa project (column 2) was completed on 12 November 2010; The unit is online and has been running stably since commissioning.
