For large synchronous generators with a power rating of several hundred megawatts, the requirements on the excitation system become very high. The problem of transmitting such a large amount of power through high-speed sliding contacts becomes difficult to solve.

At present, SNAT602TAC large synchronous motors are using brushless excitation system. Brushless exciter is a small type of direct-coupled alternator with an exciting circuit on the stator and an armature circuit on the rotor. The three-phase output of an AC exciter generator is rectified by a solid-state rectifier. The rectifier output is connected directly to the field windings, eliminating the need for brushes and slip rings.

Since there are no brushes and slip rings, SNAT602TAC brushless excitation system requires less maintenance. Power loss is also reduced. The DC required for the exciter’s own magnetic field is sometimes provided by a small secondary exciter.
