The lower part of the mill frame must have a flat surface large enough to allow the mounting of a load cell under the lower support roll bearing. The advantage of this arrangement is that special attention to the load cell is not required during roll change. See also the quote on the right for load cell kits. The toroidal load cell between the milling nut and the mill frame allows measurement even when there is insufficient space under the milling screw and under the lower support roll bearing. This arrangement also has the advantage that there is no need to pay special attention to the load cell when changing the roll, and it is well protected. The Pressductor sensor was developed in Vasteros, Sweden in the early 1950s and patented in 1954. ABB’s famous Pressductor® technology is a measurement principle based on magnetoelastic effects – the magnetic properties of a material are affected by the mechanical forces applied to it. When subjected to mechanical forces, ABB’s pressure inductor sensors generate a measurement signal due to changes in the magnetic field. (Hover your mouse over the illustration to see these changes.)
