For example, DCOM requires many ports to find other hosts, resolve names, request services, authenticate, send data, and so on. If these ports are not available, DCOM will automatically search for other ports. Any port and service used by DCOM is a target for viruses and worms. A competent hacker can create services that target those ports, query which services are running, and which services match the hacker’s exploit scripting toolkit. For example, port 135 must be opened for the initial communication handshake, as well as a series of ports, depending on the number of running processes hosting the DCOM object. The default port range is usually large, although it can usually be narrowed down. DCOM does dynamic port allocation, that is, it randomly selects ports over 1024 when it opens a connection. DCOM also does not work across network address translation (NAT). The callback is not executed on the same port, but opens a new port. This means that when a callback is established, the roles of the client and server are reversed, so the firewall treats the server as a client trying to open up network traffic to the outside world, which is likely to fail in the default firewall configuration.
Robustness :DCOM will take an unreasonably long time to fail an activation request because it tries every available network protocol (TCP, UDP, IPX, NP, etc.). Proceed in turn until all fail. A three-minute timeout is not uncommon. (The designers of DCOM claim that they chose robustness over performance, but this claim does not hold water.) Few IT professionals are willing to wait 3 minutes for a LAN connection to respond – 3 seconds, to be precise!
Most support calls received by OPC product manufacturers are due to DCOM setup configuration challenges faced by end users. We attribute this issue primarily to the complexity of setting up DCOM and Windows security. Setting up the configuration is relatively easy to manage when the OPC client and server are installed on the same machine, but the challenge starts when both systems are installed remotely, configured as NT services, or running over a WAN. To perform such a configuration, the user must be an expert in Windows security. Setup can be so complex that even with a lot of help, some users may need weeks to get the connection between the OPC client and server working properly. New OPC-based software technology is now available that avoids DCOM challenges when sending process data from one system to another, while ensuring fast, reliable and secure OPC remote communication. The Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm is a major trend in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. Based on open standards and protocols, and adopted by a large number of applications in the industry, SOA is transforming the computing and communications worlds.
