The device that converts between AC and DC at the central HVDC converter station is called a converter. Almost all HVDC converters are inherently capable of converting from AC to DC(correction, correction; Rectification; Rectification; [number] length) and from DC to AC(inversion), although in many HVDC systems, the system as a whole is optimized for power flow in only one direction. Regardless of how the converter itself is designed, the station where the power flow from AC to DC runs (at a given time) is called a rectifier, and the station where the power flows from DC to AC is called a converter.
