Microoperations exit the reordering buffer (ROB) and enter the reserve station (RS), where they wait to be dispatched to the execution unit. Up to five microoperations can be assigned to five execution units per clock cycle. The Pentium Pro has a total of six execution units: two integer units, a floating-point unit (FPU), a loading unit, a storage address unit, and a storage data unit. [6] One of the integer units shares the same port as the FPU, so in addition to the microoperations of the other three execution units, the Pentium Pro can only schedule one integer microoperation and one floating point microoperation, or two integer microoperations, per cycle. Of the two integer cells, only the one that shares the path with the FPU on port 0 has full functionality, such as barrel shifts, multipliers, dividers, and support for LEA instructions. The second integer unit, which is connected to port 1, has none of these functions and is limited to simple operations such as addition, subtraction, and computation of the branch destination address. [6]

FPU performs floating-point arithmetic. Addition and multiplication are pipelined, with delays of three and five cycles, respectively. Division and square roots are not pipelined operations, but are performed in separate units that share FPU ports. The latency of division and square root is 18-36 and 29-69 cycles, respectively. The smallest number is a single-precision (32-bit) floating-point number, and the largest is an extended precision (80-bit) floating-point number. Division and square roots can be performed at the same time as addition and multiplication, and can only be performed if the result must be stored in ROB.

After the microprocessor was released in floating point units, commonly referred to as “Pentium Pro and Pentium II FPU errors”, it was referred to by Intel as “mark Errata”. In some cases during floating-point to integer conversion, this error occurs when a floating-point number does not fit into a smaller integer format, causing the FPU to deviate from its recorded behavior. The bug is considered minor and occurs in very specific circumstances, and very few, if any, software programs are affected.
