In the future, however, derivative concepts such as Industry 4.0 and NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA) will focus on the vast amounts of data that digital field devices can provide for diagnostics and asset management. In fact, at least three-quarters of all sensors and positioners installed today are still equipped with the trusty old 4… 20 mA current loop. Therefore, standard models of field devices usually have analog interfaces, often supplemented by HART interfaces for parameter setting. Manufacturer-specific interfaces for parameterization and diagnostics are also commonly included.
Still, new (often very large-scale) production systems are also designed around fieldbuses, which means device manufacturers have to make sure they offer products for this segment as well. Analog power interfaces and HART modems must also be replaced with digital fieldbus interfaces. This requires software and hardware development work. Budgets for fieldbus integration projects can quickly reach six figures, and the time required to complete the project is usually between six and 12 months. While this effort may be acceptable to major manufacturers, this approach is not attractive to smaller manufacturers that sell only a small number of fieldbus devices.
For this customer base, Softing has developed an integrated model of hardware modules and development tools to retrofit HART and Modbus devices directly for Foundation Fieldbus and PROFIBUS PA without any programming. The combination of commModule and commScripter enables Foundation Fieldbus and PROFIBUS PA to be easily, cost-effectively and flexibly integrated into existing field equipment and those still under development.
