The TC625 TU804-1 TU515 TK516 is programmed using ladder logic
Industrial automation began long before PLCS. In the early to mid-20th century, automation was often done using complex electromechanical relay circuits. However, the amount of relays, wires, and space needed to create simple automation is problematic. A simple factory process automation may require thousands of relays! What if something in the logic circuit needs to change? Oh, my God!
Note: Basically, electromechanical relays work by magnetically opening or closing their electrical contacts when the coil of the relay is energized. Are very useful devices that still play an important role in industrial automation (for a more in-depth course on electromechanical relays, see Post).
In 1968, the first programmable logic controller was introduced, replacing complex relay circuits in factories. PLCS are designed to be easy to program by plant engineers and technicians who are already familiar with relay logic and control schematics. From the start, PLCS can be programmed using ladder logic, which is designed to mimic the control circuit schematics. A ladder diagram looks like a control circuit in which power flows from left to right through closed contacts to excite the relay coil.
Ladder logic example
As you can see, ladder logic looks like a simple schematic of a control circuit, with input sources such as switches, buttons, proximity sensors displayed on the left and output sources displayed on the right. For many in the industry, the ability to program complex automated processes using intuitive interfaces such as ladder logic makes the transition from relay logic to PLCS much simpler.
