The measured force must be as close as possible to the source of the force (roll gap). The load cell must be protected to the maximum extent possible from large bending, lateral and torsional forces. This arrangement enables good force distribution, simple, inexpensive installation, and easy maintenance. In addition, no surface needs to be machined on the mill stand. However, this arrangement does take up space in the roll-up Windows. The lower part of the mill frame must have a flat surface large enough to allow the mounting of a load cell under the lower support roll bearing.
